The film explores how Western culture appropriates certain figures and transforms them into symbols, reinterpreting them to such an extent that their original values and ideals can become almost unrecognisable. Kahlo’s legacy is examined through the lens of her impact on feminism, Mexican and Latin American identity, and the representation of disabled and queer people.
“She is definitely the girl who just doesn’t want to go away — and she won’t for a long time, because she represents so much,” explains Mari Carmen Ramírez, curator at Tate Modern. “A mestiza, a wife, a bisexual woman, and a political activist.” All of this has given rise to something truly extraordinary: Fridamania.
Frida Kahlo is no longer simply a painter or an artist. She has come to embody a mass cultural phenomenon. The film examines the different facets of Kahlo’s identity, including feminism, queerness, Mexican heritage, and the experience of disability. She is no longer merely an artist or painter, nor simply a figure circulating in the art market — she has become a cultural phenomenon. She transcends all categories: people love Frida, they want to see her, and they identify with her. She continues to embody struggles and issues that remain deeply relevant today.
